Welcome to Mahjong in MAME. Here you can find just about everything there is to know about video
mahjong as I try to explain all aspects of the game, from how the game is played, rules of the game,
strategies to make yourself a better player, Yakus, and more. Besides that, there are also game specific
guides on how to play certain mahjong games like Taisen Hot Gimmick and Suchie Pai as well as non-mahjong
games like Logic Pro and Lode Runner. There's even a guide on
how to play Koi-Koi, a Hanafuda game, as well.
Just to note, this site teaches how to play 2-player video mahjong of the Japanese variation. This site
should not be used as a primary guide to play traditional Japanese 4-player mahjong or other variations since there is a lot of information
that I leave out that are essential. Such information includes how to build the game
wall, what sets have priority over what, variation differences, and so on. The reason I do not include these information
is simple: either they do not apply at all in video mahjong, or it is because the computer automatically
does that task for you.
Video mahjong is a great game. It's both a game of skills as well as a game of luck. Though be warned
that it takes quite a bit of time to fully understand the game. You can't just play only knowing that to
win a round of mahjong, you need 4 sets and a pair. There's a lot more to the game than that.
There are special rules that you should know, scoring, as well as the all important
Yakus.
There is more to video mahjong than most people realize. Hell, even I didn't know that there was that
much to it as well :)

The Links Plus page has grown more than I thought. Over 100+ links. Will continue to update. I basically stepped into a rabbit hole while looking for content these past two weeks and found more than I thought I would. Lots of new sites and articles I never knew about.
In other news, a new 2-player mahjong game has been announced during Tokyo Game Show this week. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jong Remaster. Planned release in 2027. Never played the original. Also, never played the visual novel it's base on but maybe now's the time to try that out.
Also, several strip mahjong games are currently on sale on Nintendo eShop and DMM website. Check the Links Plus page for game listing. I bought a few more games I didn't own yet on the eShop.

Need to bring over links from the old links page or just update it with archive urls from Wayback Machine since several links there are broken.

While looking into this website again and video mahjong in general over the past month, I came across several new online articles and resources that I thought would be worth mentioning. Two in particular for now. First up is a lengthy article about the history of strip mahjong games from Tsundoku Diving. It's the best English written article I've read about the games history. It's a lengthy read (about 30-40 minutes), but it's well done. It reads like a short novel with multi-arcs. I've seen other articles online previously about the games history, but all have been in Japanese like the Japan Wikipedia entry.
Next is an online master spreadsheet that literally list (or attempts to list) every mahjong video game to have been released in arcades and consoles. Each with description, screenshot, video and common mahjong rulesets. It's extensive. If you're curious as to other games available elsewhere, check this out.
One last thing. If you came here due to Super Real Mahjong on Steam and are looking into exploring other games available on current devices, I highly recommend you look into the titles available on the Nintendo Switch. Oddly enough, the Switch became a haven for strip mahjong games as several have been release during the Switch's lifetime. This includes the games from several series including Super Real Mahjong, Taisen Hot Gimmick, Suchie-Pai and Final Romance. You can get them via Japan e-shop or physical copy online. The physical copies for Super Real Mahjong and Suchie-Pai come as a collection with all the games on a single cartridge. The physical copies are still being sold, and at online retailers like Play-Asia, are at a decent discount at the moment. I recently got the Suchie-Pai collection due to the discount and already own the other. They're both great collections.

There's a new strip mahjong game in 2026. Stripjong Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns. It's available on Steam, released in the west with english translation and has VR support. I did not expect any of that to ever happen. One common complaint with the game is lack of tutorial. If you don't mine reading, here's a tutorial website specifically for these type of games. The site has been inaccessible for quite some time (except via Wayback Machine), so I decided to restore it as a bit of a homage to the game's release. The site is now up again via new url link and new web host. Most of the site is accessible. Whatever isn't working is because its either broken (like the forum and guestbook) or some indecision on how to update those sections. There's been a few slight changes here and there as well.
Side Note. This site is old. Take a look at the time gap below between this update and the last. It's base on whatever documentation or research I did back then when I wrote this site. It was very limited back then. These days, there's plenty of well written tutorial websites and videos that are available online for Riichi Mahjong. Though, I would say, I don't think I've ever come across any tutorials specifically for 2-player video mahjong like this site.

It's been quite a while since my last update. With the unfortunate free time that I have as of late, I might as well do something with this web site. I've added a new game in the game's section: Pro Mahjong Kiwame, one of the few if only 4-player mahjong game in MAME.
Also added 2 new links in the links section and updated the Final Romance 2 page in the games section. |
